Lord Ganesha is revered as the son of the universal parents Shiva and Parvathi. He is always honored first in all worship.
The huge size of Ganesha represents the entire universe and its curled trunk symbolises AUM. Ganesha’s head represents supreme knowledge. His broken tusk represents knowledge and it is believed that he wrote Mahabharat with the tusk.
Ganesha chaturthi is observed in the month of Bhaadrapada starting on shukla chaturthi, 4th day of waxing moon
Lord Ganesha and His brother Subramanya once had a dispute as to who is the eldest. They decided to revert to Lord Shiva for a final decision. Shiva said whoever would make a tour of the world and come back has the right to the elder. Lord Subramanya flew on his peacock but the supremely wise Ganesha moves around his divine parents and claimed to be the winner.
Lord Shiva said, ‘Beloved and wise Ganesha, How can you be the winner, you did not go around’.
Ganesha replied ‘No, i have gone around my parents and they represents the entire universe’. The matter was settled and Ganesha acknowledged to be the eldest.
