School is an organization. Like businesses‘or other ‘organizations’, the essence of Human Resource Management can be safely applied in our schools, the more principles so as our schools are ‘Business for people by people’. In a school the overall responsibility for management rests with the Head teacher. The success of the head teacher. The success of the head teacher’s managerial role depends to a large extent on the way he/she has to be a leader, facilitator and guide imbued with personal skills and expertise in order to successfully monitor, control and manage the students and staff.
Good relationship can be built by the head of a school by showing genuine interest in each member of the staff. Showing understanding in case the member has a problem be it professional or personal as these can affect his/her performance is also of great importance. Help must be extended through advice in case difficulty crops up in teaching. It is the head teacher’s managerial duty to set clear and agreed goals so that everyone knows what is expected of him or her. This wi0ll no doubt avoid misunderstanding and conflict. Meeting with each member of the staff formally and informally discussing difficulties, praising in public and rebuking in private add to the success of the manager ‘Acknowledging genuine effort to do well, promoting good relationship with each other and with the head avoiding back biting, criticizing and talking ill of one teacher with another as everyone will eventually discover what has been said enrich a head teacher personality and heed him towards charisma. A head teacher must discourage gossip, say what he means and means what he says. Besides he/she must advise and not order, be firm without being harsh, rude and peremptory. By D Luchunum
